Kayazy Assassins by cwalton73 Kayazy Assassins by cwalton73
The kayazy, merchant-princes of the new Khadoran Empire, have long employed bands of skilled and ruthless bladesmen to settle scores. Now these private soldiers go south to protect their masters' investment in the war. With a swift dueling style honed on the pitiless streets, these casual killers easily avoid unfavorable fights to attack in a group and quickly dispatch even well armored foes.

READ ME!

It seems lately that no other models have sparked as much fear and loathing as the Kayazy Assassins in the Privateer Press community...now, that being said I have no problem discussing the concept art here on DA but there are a couple of caveats:

I will not tolerate any untoward comments regarding the sculptor's or painter's abilities or talents. These individuals worked very hard for Privateer and I have nothing negative to say regarding their work. Nor will I tolerate what I percieve as denigrating them in an open arena. To do so is the quickest route you can take to my banned user list - I haven't had to use it, so don't make me.

If you like 'em - awesome. I drew 'em, so don't expect me not to. If you don't - well we all can't always be on the same wave length and that's too bad. Maybe next time.

For the Motherland! Yeah the sculpts may not have done your work justice, but I'll still get those. What faction do you play?

I didn't mind the models. I didn't really know what to expect since I didn't read any fluff or see any other pictures.

Good work.

I just had my first experience with miniatures design (did a couple for Wizkids "Horrorclix"). I've only seen the prototype sculpts of mine so far, but they're looking pretty sweet, interpretations by the sculptors and all.

I'd like to see the sculpts for these designs. Do you have a link? And did you have to do turnarounds as well, or just the one vignette standup per model?

Congrats on the Wizkids stuff. I've worked for a couple of companies, but never them. Its always a little bit of a crap shoot with how the sculptors will interperate concept art - I've had ones I was less than happy with and others who took my ideas and kicked em to the next level. You just never know.

Here's a link to the posted finishes [link]=picture&id=371

Thanks! Though it was a subcontract gig, so I can't get any credit for working directly with Wizkids. I'm just a pen for hire.

In the interests of full disclosure, one of the sculpts they had to interpret was a sort of amorphous blob with teeth and eyes shambling over rubble. If someone messed that up, I'd be really surprised.

:D

But yeah, it was a lot of fun, and turnarounds are cinchy easy to me given my animation background. I'd hop at the chance to do it again in a heartbeat.

Gah...turnarounds take me so long to do...I'm actually working on control view drawings right now at work and it would be killing me if I didn't love the subject matter...

Oh well, congrats on the Wizkids work even if it was subcontract. After doing this for a year and a half as my living, I still think its neat to see one of my drawings become 3D.

And the amorphous blobs always end up becoming more work than you'd think by the end! :)

Well, turnarounds are certainly easier to do now that I draw digitally... in Photoshop, you can drag one view over another to make sure that everything is lined up and proportional.

Prior to my WACOM addiction I would use a light-table and essentially do the same thing, though... draw each view on a separate sheet and lay them over the top of each other. It's especially easier if you have a pegbar setup like I've had ever since I got into animation... it forces the registration of the images so that you're less concerned with tilt or skew. Before pegbars, I'd tape it to the light-table. Before I got a good light-table, I would tape things to a window or a sliding glass door and use daylight.

Whatever works. :D

I agree with CurseReaper, your concept art is amazing for this unit. Have you seen the models up close and personal? How closely do they resemble your concept?

I've seen them up close and I didn't have any complaints. I just think people were expecting something more "standard" in terms of "assassins" - and at PP we kinda define ourselves by staying away from the "standard."

Wow I think these guys look so cool. Are you saying some people don't like them? I haven't been on the PPS forums in eons...been far too busy with other things.

Hey did you see the drawing I did recently? Its my featured deviation, and I think its the best drawing I have done so far. :)

Yeah, reaction to the sculpts was less than stellar and more than a little nasty. C'est la vie.

Keep up the good work on your drawings, btw!
